Nick Willis is through to the final of the 1500m at the World Indoor Champs in Portland, USA.
Running in the second of two heats the New Zealand record holder had the comfort of knowing that the first heat was run slowly, and with the first three and next three fastest times making the final, he needed only to finish in the top six in a quicker race.
Quicker it was and Willis ran well within himself, not having to unleash his famous sprint, finishing in sixth and keeping his powder dry for Monday’s final.
Willis’ race was won by Souleiman from Djibouti in 3:41.04 while the Kiwi was timed at 3:41.53. The first heat winner was Matt Centrowitz in 3:47.15.
Willis will be mindful that he has been disqualified in the his previous two world indoor championship finals for stepping onto the inside of the track in heavy traffic.
The final will be raced on Monday morning NZ time.
