World University Games

Aaron Booth won New Zealand’s only gold medal, out of all sports, at the Games, a gold in the decathlon with a personal best score of 7827 points. The 22 year old USA based athlete was second after day one with a score of 3993. He had a PB pole vault of 4.80m which held him in second behind Alexander Diamond of Australia. A javelin throw of 60.51m propelled him into the lead which he maintained after a 1500m of 4:31.38. Diamond was second with a score of 7593.

New Zealand decathlon champion Max Attwell with personal best performances in the 100m and 400m, was fourth with a PB of 7420 points.

Since his secondary school days at Mt Albert Grammar School Booth has chalked up an impressive record of achievements improving with almost each outing. He was the Oceania under 18 octathlon champion in 2013, the national junior decathlon champion in 2014, won silver in the decathlon at the 2015 Oceania championships and at previous World University Games was 13th in the decathlon in 2015 and third in 2017. In the States he was 14th in the 2018 NCAA division 1 decathlon in Eugene and showed good form coming into Naples with a sixth placing at the NCAA division 1 in Austin in June.

The New Zealand women’s team of Olivia Eaton, Brooke Somerfield, Georgia Hulls and Natasha Eady went close to the 2001 New Zealand record of 44.60 in the heats of the 4 x 100m relay qualifying for the final with a time of 44.77 and in the final the team of Olivia Eaton, Zoe Hobbs, Georgia Hulls and Natasha Eady took the bronze medal with a New Zealand national record of 44.24. The previous record was set by Chantel Brunner, Jane Arnott, Rebecca Wardell and Caro Hunt in Auckland in March 2001.

Olivia McTaggart was fourth in the pole vault, Keeley O’Hagan fifth in the high jump, James Preston sixth in the 800m, Maddison-Lee Wesche sixth in the shot put, Lauren Bruce seventh in the hammer throw, Zoe Hobbs seventh in the 100m and eighth in the 200m, Nick Southgate ninth in the pole vault and Hannah Miller ninth in the 5000m and 11th in the 10,000m. Imogen Ayris tenth in the pole vault and Ryan Ballantyne 11th in the shot put.
