Oceania Athletics Championships
Oceania Athletics Championships, Townsville Sports Reserve, Townsville – 25/28 June 2019

Commonwealth champion Julia Ratcliffe highlighted the final day of competition at the Oceania championships with record breaking hammer throw of 71.93m, which was also a world championships qualifier. Ratcliffe broke her own New Zealand national record of 70.28m set in the States in 2014 and extended Bronwyn Eagles 2003 Oceania record of 71.12m and Eagles 2010 Oceania championship record of 62.99m. Nicole Bradley was third with 64.49m and Lauren Bruce fourth with a personal best 63.12m.

Hamish Kerr booked a ticket to Doha with a New Zealand equalling record of 2.30m in the high jump. He joins Glenn Howard as joint holder of the record. Kerr also set a championship record.While pleased with his performance and qualifying for the world championships Kerr was looking for an Tokyo Olympic Games qualifying height.“While it’s a great honour to be up there with Glenn Howard I had bigger fish to fry and the Tokyo qualifier was on my mind,” said Kerr.

“It was cool to get 2.30m and I ticked that and moved on to 2.33m.“It’s opened up the world and changed the way I look at sport and I’m unbelievably excited for the future,” he added. Kerr now looks forward to the World University Games in Naples Italy with the athletics starting next week.

Maddie Wilson set a New Zealand under 18 heptathlon record of 5179 points breaking Joanne Henry’s 1989 record of 5136 set in Hastings. Wilson produced a personal best performance in five of the seven events, the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m and 800m.

Other winners with an Oceania championship record were Zoe Hobbs SW 100m 11.56 -0.4, Josephine Reeves U/20 high jump 1.82m and SW high jump 1.86m, Oli Chignell SM 5000m 14:07.17, Tatiana Kaumoana U/20 discus throw 52.91m, Nikolas Kini U/18 shot put 18.33m, Daniel du Toit U/18 5000m race walk 22:14.09, Jacko Gill SM shot put 20.75m and Imogen Ayris U/20 pole vault 4.10m.

WELLINGTON

Wellington Marathon, Westpac Stadium – 30 June 2019
Hirotaka Tanimoto was a clear winner of the Wellington marathon in 2:27:12. Mark Moore who finished third in the Christchurch marathon in 2:28:24, was second in 2:31:52. Tsubasa Hokomura who won the trip to Wellington as the first Sakai resident to finish the Senshu marathon last February was third in 2:33:49.

Sonya Cameron of Dunedin was the first woman in 3:02:46 from Lisa Brignull 3:05:53 and Ingrid Cree 3:10:37. Marathon walk; David Jones 5:11:56 and Christine Maxwell 5:26:03.

Half marathon: Christopher Dryden 1:08:54, Nicholas Sunseri 1:09:07, Nathan Tse 1:10:47 PB. Lisa Cross 1:17:17 (course record), Sarah Gardner 1:19:49, Debbie Donald 1:23:55. Half walk; Eric Kemsley 2:11:30 and Jacqueline Wilson 2:26:17.

International Results
USA

IAAF Diamond League, Prefontaine Classic, Cobb Track and Angell Field, Stanford CA, 30 June: Tom Walsh was upstaged by Brazilian Darlan Romani in the shot put only managing third with 21.76m. Ryan Crouser opened with 22.17m and led up to round three. Romani started with 21.64m and improved each round, taking the lead in round three with 22.46m. His best came in round five with 22.61m, a national record for him as well as a meet and Diamond League record. Crouser was unable to improve on his first throw and had to settle for second. Walsh was consistent over his six attempts but was unable to crack the 22 metres. His series was 21.63, 21.62, 21.28, 21.55 21.69 and 21.76.
Nick Willis was 14th and last in the Bowerman mile in 3:59.35, won by Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya in 3:50.49.
