NZ Team for World Indoor Athletics Championships Announced

Valerie Adams will head a team of five athletes in the New Zealand team to compete in the IAAF World Indoor Championships in the Polish city of Sopot on 7 - 9 March.

It will be the largest team that New Zealand has ever sent to a world indoor championships. The  team for the highly competitive event comprises two shot putters and three distance runners.

It will be Adams' fifth world indoor campaign with the first in 2004. She has two world titles and a silver medal to show for her efforts to date and is the defending champion.

Nick Willis has competed at one previous World Indoor championships, in 2008 at Valencia, where he finished 2nd in his 1500m heat, but was disqualified in the following round.

Lucy van Dalen will contest the 3000m and is an experienced indoor competitor, having spent a number of years in the US on scholarship where indoor racing is commonplace. It will, however, be her first world indoor championships.

Tomas Walsh (shot put) and Zane Robertson (3000m) are new to indoor competition, but are looking forward to a good showing.

Adams has left for her training base in Switzerland to complete her preparations, while the rest of the team departs later this week.
