Zane Robertson completed a successful World Indoor championships for the New Zealand team, finishing in 12th place in the 3000m final in the last session in the Polish city of Sopot.

The race was run at a slow pace and Robertson went to the front midway trying to force the pace, leading at the 2000m mark. He could not however go with the furious sprint over the last five laps which were run in 2:23.

Robertson's time was 8:01.01, some 16 seconds slower than his New Zealand record in the heat two days earlier, but the winning time of Kenyan Caleb Ndiku  at 7:54.94 was 24 seconds outside his best.

The championships were easily Athletics New Zealand's best ever, with two medals to shot putters Valerie Adams and Tom Walsh, while Robertson and Nick Willis both made finals of their respective events.

The New Zealand team finished eleventh on the medals table from 141 countries contesting the championships, the best ever at either an outdoor or indoor world championships.

The meeting finished with a world record to the USA in the men’s 4x400 relay.
