2018 International Competition Options for Youth (Under 18) Athletes

Athletics NZ has released a Statement about the 2018 international competition options for Youth (Under 18) athletes.

There will be two opportunities specifically for Youth Athletes (i.e. athletes born in 2001 or 2002) to represent New Zealand in Athletics this year:



  1. Youth Olympic Games, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 6 – 18 October
  2. Oceania Polynesian Regional Championships, Apia, Samoa, 4 – 5 October

In addition to these two youth competitions, there is also:

  • IAAF World Under 20 Championships, Tampere, Finland, 10 – 15 July (Youth athletes can apply for selection for this competitions, provided they have met the under 20 performance standards. These performance standards are based on the under 20 height and weight implements.)

Generally, youth athletes will only be selection for one international competition per year.

Applications for the NZOC long list are now live and athletes wanting to be considered for the Youth Olympic Games are required to enter by the stipulated closing date of Monday 19th February 2018. There is a $200 bond payable on application. Due to NZOC regulations, if you are not on the long list you will not be eligible for selection and there will be no extension to this February 19th deadline.

IAAF World U20 Championships Applications for Selection are currently online and due to close on the 18th April 2018. Please click here to read more and apply for this Competition.

Applications for Selection for the Oceania Polynesian Regional Championships will open in February, along with the publication of the Selection Policy.
