Angie Smit made a dramatic break through on the world scene with a massive personal best 800m in finishing second to Beijing Olympic Games 800m gold medallist Pamela Jelimo of Kenya.
Smit from Rangiora North Canterbury sliced over three seconds off her previous best, set two years ago in Canada, in clocking 2m 00.67s, tantalising close to the New Zealand London Olympic qualifying time of two minutes. Jelimo recorded 1m 56.76s.
Smit, won the national 800m title at Waitakere in March and was second in the 400m and 1500m and is now ranked third on the New Zealand all time list behind Toni Hodgkinson and Nikki Hamblin.
Nick Willis showed good form leading into the London Olympics with a third over 800m in 1m 46.18s, close to his best of 1m 45.54s.
Zane Robertson was seventh in the 1500m in 3m 38.58s with his twin brother Jake recording 13m 26.66s for 14th in the 5000m. Fiona Morrison was fifth in the 100m hurdles in 13.78s (+0.3), Tama Toki fifth in the 200m in 21.26s (+0.7) and Elizabeth Lamb sixth with a clearance of 1.84m in the high jump. Alex Jordan was 8th in the 400m in 48.11s, Malcolm Hicks third in the 5000m C in 13m 59.49s and Matt Lambert was third in heat two of the 1500m in 3m 48.67s.

FRANCE
Meeting d'Athlétisme Stanislas Nancy, Tomblaine – 8 July 2012
Valerie Adams maintained her unbeaten record this season in her lead up to defending her Olympic title, with a winning shot put of 20.97m in Tomblaine. Adams was consistent with all attempts over 20 metres (20.41, 20.62, 20.26, 20.29, 20.97, 20.54). Jessica Cerival of France, the 2009 Mediterranean Games champion, was second with 16.67m.
Meanwhile arch rival Nadzeya Ostapchuk improved on her own national record in Grodno Belarus on 6 July with a put of 21.39m. She had three over 21 metres in the competition, 21.32m in round two, 21.05m in the third and the 21.39m in the sixth round. Natallia Mikhnevich, 2006 world indoor and European champion, was second with a season’s best of 19.77m.

Wickes previous best was 47.36s in winning the national M16 title in Wellington in 2009. Michael Cochrane 110m hurdles 5th 2nd Ht 14.72s (-1.1) and 5th A final 14.78s (-0.9).

BMC Meeting, Stretford Trafford – 7 July 2012
Tim Prendergast in a lead up race towards the London Paralympics was third in the ninth 800m race at the British Milers’ Club meeting recording 1m 56.22s.
REBECCA WARDELL DEFEATED BY INJURY
Rebecca Wardell’s quest to compete in the heptathlon at the London Olympics has been defeated by an injured hamstring. Wardell was to have a last-ditch effort in qualifying at the French combined events championships over the weekend, but after a fitness test she ruled herself out after only being able to run at 90 per cent and was unable to hurdle.

South Island Cross Country Championships, incorporating the Kennett Cup Steeples, QEII Park – 7 July 2012
A month after his career best marathon Sam Wreford was again in top form winning the annual South Island cross country title. Wreford covered the 9000m in 28m 11s, to head in Brett Tingay 29m 25s and Nick Rennie 30m 13s. Rosa Flanagan won the women’s 5056m in 17m 27s from Nicki McFadzien 17m 34s and Reubyn Bisschops 18m 7s. Jack Moody won the junior 6225m in 20m 21s with Michael Lowe second 20m 50s and Matt Dryden third 20m 56s. Laura Steffens won the junior women’s 5056m in 19m 49s, from Pip Dalley 20m 9s and Sophie Evans 20m 40s. Richard Bennett won the masters 9000m in 30m 34s, 21 seconds ahead of Axel Reiser. Leonie Kaywood won the master women’s 5056m in 20m 20s from Fiona Gilroy 20m 36s.
