16.Erdgas Mehrkampf Meeting IAAF World Combined Events, Ratingen – 14/15 June 2012
Rebecca Wardell was a surprise leader after day one of the heptathlon. Wardell produced two personal bests and went close in a third event to lead with a score of 3706. Her personal bests were high jump 1.75m and shot put 15.30m. In the 100m hurdles she was just .01s outside her PB clocking 14.02s (+0.1). Wardell finished day one with a time of 24.50s (-0.2) over 200m. After a good start to day two with a 5.91m (0.0) long jump disaster struck as she injured her left hamstring in the process of the jump. It was extremely unfortunate, because her first jump was reported to have been a very good one, possibly longer than six metres, but by mistake officials did not measure this jump and instead they started to rake while the athlete and the spectators were waiting for the result on the scoreboard. Wardell was then given an extra jump at the end of round one, where she achieved the 5.91m.
Able to jog but not stride out Wardell decided to withdraw from the competition.
Sarah Cowley was fifth after the first day with 3495 points after performances of 13.60s (+0.9), 1.81m, 12.98m and 26.14s (+0.4). Cowley, with a slight foot injury from day one, did not start on day two. Julia Mächtig of Germany won with a total of 6345.
Cowley and Wardell will both compete in the French championships in the first week of July.
Wardell said it was a great feeling to get to the starting line in Ratingen after recovering from a previous injury only to be struck down on day two.
“The rollercoaster ride that is sport, and life! To have battled with injury to get to the start line in Ratingen, and then to be doing amazing, and the body feeling great.....it was just a freak thing that sometimes happens in sport when you are pushing the limits (strain most likely caused by slightly over-striding on the final take-off step which just put a little too much pressure on the hammy),” said Wardell in an email to her supporters.
“So that's my story, the first half was amazing, the second half heartbreaking. Ratingen was my good luck charm in 2008 to qualify for Beijing, and was so close to being the same again in 2012! The hammy isn't serious, but enough to stop me in my tracks for now, but I will be back!!!! I will take the positives from this, I got myself in a position to score 6200+ this weekend and I know I can do that again, and more, come French Champs and the Olympics.”

Lucy Van Dalen ran a personal best 1500m of 4m 8.09s in finishing second. This time also now ranks her fourth on the New Zealand all time list behind Nikki Hamblin 4m 4.82s, Toni Hodgkinson 4m 6.23s and Chrissie Pfitzinger 4m 6.47s.
Meanwhile Hamish Carson did not finish the 1500m at the American milers’ series in Indianapolis Indiana on 16 June. Race was won by Jeff See of USA in 3m 35.21s.
NIKKI HAMBLIN OUT OF OLYMPIC GAMES
Commonwealth Games double silver medallist Nikki Hamblin will not be competing at the London Olympic Games.
Hamblin has been nursing a troublesome Achilles tendon for some time and withdrew from a race in Shanghai recently when it flared up again. She has consulted specialists in Michigan, USA and an MRI scan this week confirmed a small tear in the tendon.
Hamblin is very disappointed in having to make the decision to withdraw from contention for London. She bettered the selection standard for the 1500 metres twice last year and won the New Zealand title in March. Her training was going well and she was confident she would be able to satisfy the selectors that her fitness was up to standard for nomination and selection in the team.
She will now take a break and consider the options for treatment and rehabilitation with an eye on the World Championships in Moscow next year and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
AUSTRALIA
Australian 100km Championship, Burleigh Heads Gold Coast – 10 June 2012
New Zealand ultra distance runner Martin Lukes won the 100km in 7h 44m 21s beating defending champion David Eadie of Australia.
In 2003 Mark Hutchinson of New Zealand won the Gold Coast 100km in 7h 41m 45s and in 2006 Robert Ware won in 7h 51m 43s.
AUCKLAND
New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships, St Kentigern College Pakuranga – 16 June 2012
It proved fourth year lucky for Matt Baxter of New Plymouth Boys’ High as he left no doubt that he was the best winning the senior boys title in convincing fashion.
For the last three years he has finished runner up at the championships - in the junior boys in 2009 and in the last two senior races.
“It’s all I’ve thought about for the last four months. Every single sprint session it’s been on my mind.
“It is a thrill to win, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, so for it to actually pay off is just amazing,” said a delighted Baxter.
Baxter dominated the 6km race from the start, leading the large field around three circuits of the College grounds. He finished full of running in 19m 34s. In a close battle for second, Michael Sutton out sprinted Finn Wilson by two seconds to claim the silver medal in 19m 57s.
Baxter said with such a strong field he wanted to start fast.
“From the start I was aiming to go to the front. I wanted to hit the first corner pretty hard so I got the lead and was not getting bunched up and stuff,” he said.
“I might have gone a bit too hard – like I was struggling for air on the hill on the far side of the course, but I was sort of able to maintain my pace especially on that last lap and come home fairly strong,” he added.
Baxter now looks forward to the North Island and the New Zealand cross country championships.
Rosa Flanagan of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School added the senior girls’ title to the junior girls’ won last year.
The diminutive power house rocketed around the two laps completing the 4km in 14m 56s, 46s ahead of Jessica Martin with a further three seconds to Susannah Lynch in third.
Flanagan said that she enjoyed the course.
“The hills are probably one of my stronger things as I have been doing a bit of hill training. The first lap I felt good and strong and then by the time of the second lap I felt a bit exhausted but I kept going. The goal is now to win it again next year,” said Flanagan.
Year nine boys’ winner last year Daniel Hintz returned to win the junior boys 4km in 13m 49s after a close race with Sean Eustace.
Hintz said he was not expecting Eustace to give him such a good run for his money.
“I just got there,” said an almost breathless Hintz at the finish.
“I used the first 1500m to see how I felt and to see how the other guys were going and to either move up or slow down so that I had the strength there in the middle stages. I then knew I would have a strong finish,” said Hintz.
He will try for the set of titles next year in the seniors.
“I’ll have to train a lot harder cause there will be older and a lot more experienced runners,” he said.
Eustace was second in 13m 53s with Conal Wilson third.
Josie Kozyniak showed plenty of determination in collecting the junior girls’ title over 3km in 10m 51s, six seconds ahead of Ainsley Thorpe and Arianna Lord.
“I wasn’t in the top group at the start but I got in front as I don’t usually have a good sprint at the end. I was really tiring as there were lots of like muddy bits and it was hard to lift your feet out of it,” said Kozyniak.
Dan Hoy led in the year nine boys’ 3km in 9m 38s, ten seconds faster than Matthew Manning with Angus Bailey third.
Hoy was back on familiar territory having beaten Manning for the Auckland secondary schools junior title at the College two weeks ago.
“I tried to do what I had done last time. I pushed the pace from the start to get the lead and I got to the downhill and pushed it a little bit and then pushed it up the hills and tried to hold it from there,” said Hoy.
Paige Satchel from John Paul College in Rotorua won the year nine girls’ 3km in 10m 41s, 11 seconds ahead of Ari Graham.

In his first competitive outing since snapping his Achilles tendon at the beginning of the last track season Joshua Hawkins equalled the New Zealand M18 110m hurdles record of 14.22s. The world youth hurdles silver medallist had three races over the 990mm hurdles 14.22s (+1.2), 14.17s (+2.3) and 14.22s (+1.0).
Portia Bing showed good form leading into the world junior championships heptathlon competition with three personal bests, 200m 24.63s (+1.5), 100m hurdles 14.19s (+1.2) and long jump 5.93m (NWR).

SOUTHLAND
McIndoe Casket Teams Cross country, Wyndham Racecourse – 16 June 2012
Invercargill retained both the men’s and women’s team’s trophies although Gore and St Pauls took out the individual honours. Ricky Gutsell (Gore) won the senior men’s 9km race by over a minute from Glen McLeay (St Pauls) who went past Troy McAlister in the third of the three laps. However with McAlister third, Jordan Rackham fourth, Glen Macintosh fifth and Grant Adamson seventh, the Invercargill club convincingly took the team’s trophy with 19 points to Gore’s 35 and Fiordland 43. Holly Pierce, Rose Heyrick and Linda Te Au comprised the scoring runners that gave Invercargill the women’s trophy in the 6km race, won by Ffion Muhl (St Pauls) who took the Sue Rodgers Memorial Trophy. Liam Cullen (St Pauls) was first M16 over 6km and Campbell Johnstone (Gore) was first in the junior 3km event.
