The Athletics New Zealand and Athletics Coaches Association of New Zealand Coaches Hall of Fame was officially launched in 2006 during the inaugural biennial coaching conference. This was followed by an evening in Auckland where the inductees or family representatives were present to accept the award honouring the coaches contribution to athletics in New Zealand.
The Coaches Conference was designed to target two the key objectives of the New Zealand Coaching Strategy (SPARC). Firstly to have improved opportunities for coach education and secondly at a time that coaches could attend (more time for coaches). The third objective of the New Zealand Coaching Strategy is around increasing the recognition and status of coaches. It was with this in mind that the Athletics Coaches Hall of Fame was brought to life.
There will be debate over who the initial inductees into the Hall of Fame should have been and many highly respected coaches were discussed during the decision and should be inducted in the coming years.
Four coaches were inducted in 2006. Profiles, information and photos about each of these coaches can be found by clicking on their name.
